Herschel Ace Gentry, Sr. was born on August 20, 1904 in Jackson Parish, Louisiana to the union of Earnest Hudson Gentry and Minta Temple Gentry. He died in Monroe on December 21, 2006.

His life has spanned over a century! During all of his 102 years, he never lost his zest for life, his sense of humor and deep love of family and the church. The one abiding love of his life was his wife, Jean Littleton Gentry from their marriage on April 4, 1926, until her death on October 6, 1996. He fell in love literally at first sight in Newport, Arkansas and for 70 years they enjoyed a happy and successful marriage. Both loved family, home and church.

Mr. Gentry was an entrepreneur in the retail business and in agriculture. He founded New York Hardware and Furniture in the 1930's when times were very hard. Now it is run by his son and his grandson. His love of agriculture was deep and he acquired several farms throughout the area, including one with the historical Watson Brake archaeological site.

He was born on a small farm in Jackson Parish then moved to Newport, Arkansas and later Monroe, Louisiana. His stories of the early 1900's always delighted his children, grandchildren and great grand children. In 1996 when he was 92 he was recognized as the "Outstanding Older Worker" in the Monroe-West Monroe area. One of his accomplishments was becoming a long-time instructor for the Dale Carnegie courses; he helped hundreds with their public speaking. The First Baptist Church in West Monroe and Parkview Baptist Church in Monroe were recipients of his devotion as was the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home.

During his entire lifetime he liked to relive the fun times of having a growing "at home" family. One of the joys of his lifetime was in being able to travel world wide as he and his wife did for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jean Littleton Gentry: his granddaughter, Sylvia Jean Huenefeld: his daughter-in-law, Barbara Elliott Gentry: his brothers and sisters, Earnest Haze Gentry, Benjamin Alvis Gentry, Lorene Gentry Grigsby and Venice Gentry Easterling.
