James was born on November 4, 1919 and went to heaven on November 8, 2013. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; parents, Harris and Sallie; three sisters and four brothers. He is survived by his sons; Jimmy Burford, Harvey Burford and wife, Janice, Richie Burford and wife, Sandy; his daughter Sally Owen and husband Marshall; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. His grandsons will be pallbearers. He was born in Gloster, LA and knew at age 11 he wanted to be a farmer. After all, he would say, "cows make you money while you sleep". As a teenager he watched the antebellum home "Welcome Hall" burn and knew that was the land he wanted to own. He purchased that land and moved with his wife and first child before they ever even owned a car. He cleared the land by hand, started a dairy and proved wrong the man who said they would starve on that hill. He sat in the same seat every Sunday at Gloster Baptist Church for most of his life. He drank coffee every morning with his aging parents, then every morning with his sons in his aging years. He rode his horse every day until he was 92. He was a family man, cattleman, dairy farmer, real estate developer, storekeeper, lover of horses, great dancer and a happy, generous man. Looking back, he said, "He wouldn't change a thing".
