Eugene G. Bird A former mayor of La Center, Eugene G. Bird, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 1996, in a local care center. He was 82. He had owned Birds Mercantile in La Center for 28 years, served on the Vancouver Planning Board for three years and had been active in the La Center schools and sports programs. Mr. Bird was one of the organizers of the La Center Wheel Club and a member of Moose Lodge 1774 in Vancouver. He was a volunteer at the Humane Society of Vancouver and had owned a variety of pets. Born Jan. 12, 1914, in Stockham, Neb., he had lived in La Center 42 years before moving to Vancouver 10 years ago. After he retired, Mr. Bird had operated a television repair shop and served on the Vancouver planning board. His first wife, Dorene, died in 1974. Survivors include his wife, Marguerite, at home; two stepdaughters, Maria Hunter of Vancouver and Sheila Swafford of Scappoose, Ore.; two sons, Ron of Vancouver and Jerry of Springfield, Ore.; one stepson, Jeff Clark of Vancouver; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren. A memorial service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel, with burial in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
