John was born in Sunderland, Durham to John Clark & Mary Stonehouse.
He was the Schoolmaster of Wainuiomata and married Harriet Sophia Burroughs on 31 Jan 1866.
He died 13 Aug 1870 in Wainuiomata, having gone looking for missing cattle. He became lost in the bush and died of exposure and exhaustion. His body was found 3 days later

Harriet next married Frederick Kershaw Crowther (1833-1907) 9 April 1873 - they adopted a daughter, Frances 'Eva' Frear (1872-1896), a daughter of George (1841-1876) & Elizabeth (1845-) Frear who arrived on the 'Howrah' into Wellington Nov 1874 (also read her notes)
