Mary Ellen was the second of 2 children born to Mary (Hunt) and Anthony Lavelle. Her Mom died shortly after her birth and her Dad 3 years later. She and her brother Patrick were raised by their Aunt and Uncle in NY.

On May 29, 1859, she married Patrick Gogerty (Gogarty). He worked for the Rail Road and the family lived in Kansas, Colorado and Montana. In their later years they lived with their daughters in Montana and Washington.
