As a private in Company H Massachusetts 2nd Heavy Artillery Regiment, he was captured on 20 April 1864 in Plymouth, NC and taken to Andersonville prison. After 6 months in Andersonville, GA, he was transferred to Florence, SC where it is believed he died in the fall of 1864 as a POW.
