Daughter of Dr. William Potter Shaw and Harriet Geisinger (Shafer) Shaw of Berlin, Pa., Mary Elizabeth Shaw married accountant Robert B. Berkey (1910-1970).

According to her obituary, preserved in the Pennsylvania Genweb archives, Mary Shaw trained as a nurse at Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, Maryland; she and her husband and their daughter Susan moved to Long Beach, California in 1944.

Her one sibling, Helen Louise Shaw (1914-1985), remained single.
