Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 24, for a Seaman in the United States Navy who lived through the attack on Pearl Harbor without a scratch, but who died when the submarine to which he was assigned was torpedoed by the Japanese in the South China Sea in 1944.
He was Buford John Young Sp Seaman, 3rd Class, who was born and grew up at Lutie. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jason Young. Mr. Young's son, John Buford (Johnny Young) of Tulsa, born six weeks after his father's death, requested that the official marker honoring his father be placed at Wellington, the town most closely identified with Buford Young.
Johnny Young, with his wife and three sons, and his mother, Winnie Kirklin Young Fielder of Fort Worth, will be here for the memorial service. Because more than a year elapsed between the time the Submarine Harder, on which Mr. Young served, was sunk, and the Navy's officially declared as Killed in Action, a memorial service was not held at that time.
Buford Young was born June 26, 1918, at Lutie, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jason Young, and the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Young, early settlers here. He attended school at Lutie and Samnorwood, where he graduated in 1938.
A few months later, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Wichita Falls. His ship was in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japanese Air Force opened its attack on the United States Fleet. Mr. Young was standing on deck, shaving, when the first bombs fell. A friend standing beside him was killed instantly. Buford Young went through the attack unscathed.
But he chose to enlist in the Submarine fleet and completed the required training. He was assigned to the USS Harder. The Harder took part in Battles through the Pacific Theatre Operations until August, 1944, when it was torpoded and sunk in waters near the Philippine Islands, of the China Sea.
Members of the Young family met with the alternate crew of the USS Harder this summer and learned from them much information about the Naval service of "Tex" Young, as he was known to Navy friends, but also that the ship which torpedoed the Harder was a United States Craft that had been captured by the Japanese and was manned by them.
Two brothers and two sisters of Mr. Young survive: Orville Young of Alamo; Mrs. Dan Austin (Arlene Young) of Houston, Robert Young of Arlington and Mrs. Doyle Beene (Katie Young) of Weatherford.
