Army Pfc. Smith was assigned to 1st Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, Fort Riley, Kansas. Smith was a cavalry scout in Baghdad. He was escorting heavy equipment transporters when his vehicle hit unexploded ordnance, killing him. In and out of foster homes most of his childhood, Jeremiah grew up in Independence, Missouri where he attended William Chrisman High School his freshman year. He was married and had two daughters, ages 3 and 5. Jeremiah wanted to become a teacher and he was going to use his Army benefits to pay for college. He wanted to help teach young people about life.
