Joseph was the son of Thomas Brown and Katie Brown Hoge. He enlisted in the Navy at League Island, PA in 1899. He served on the USS Dixie 1899-1900, the USS Princeton 1900-1902, the USS Buffalo 1902-1902, the USS Texas 1902-1903, then transferred to U.S. Naval Hospital Chelsea at Boston, MA in 1903. He was a landman 1899-1901 then coxswain to 1903 then boatswain's mate 2nd class. He married Annie Turner on 14 Dec 1904 he was now an ordinance helper. He registered for WWI. He later worked for Supplee Milk Jones Co. as a forman driver, salesman and wagon driver. He died at 916 W. Silver St., Phila.
