Pearl Starling was one of four children born to Elbert Cicero (Roe)Starling and Minnie Lenore Sessions. She attended Barsola and Forest schools, entered sub-college at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1923, did two years high school work and graduated from there with a Bachelor of Science degree.

She married Ollie Lee Bates, son of Billie and Lou Bates, on July 17, 1926, at the First Baptist Church in Barsola. They had five children:
