DEATH OF MRS. EMMA CARUTHERS
A Good Woman and One of Our Oldest Citizens Passes to Her Reward.

Tuesday the friends of Mrs. Emma Caruthers were not surprised but were shocked to learn that her gentle spirit had winged its flight back to a land that is fairer than day.

For many years Mrs. Caruthers has been an invalid and was confined to her home, where loved ones watched over and ministered to every want.

Mrs. Caruthers was born in this county and was happily married to Mr. Jesse Caruthers, and during her married life lived near Pickens. After the death of her husband, her eldest son came to Yazoo City and entered the employ of the late J. F. Powell. Mrs. Caruthers then with her family moved to Yazoo City and has resided here since.

She joined the Presbyterian church in early life and lived a life consistent with its teachings. The shadow of sorrow that came over her life in the death of her devoted husband had scarcely passed when the sable wings of death hovered over her home and took her eldest son. The sorrow was too deep for the tender heart to overcome and while her faith in an all wise being was strong she still longed and pined for the love and companionship of those that she had leaned upon for comfort and happiness.

Mrs. Caruthers before her marriage was Miss Swayze, and two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Caruthers and Miss Fannie Swayze are left to weep over the passing of a good, kind and affectionate sister.

Wednesday morning the body was taken back to the scenes of her childhood, where so many hallowed and happy memories clustered and there by the side of her loved ones it was laid to rest, the services being conducted by Rev. W. J. Caldwell of the Presbyterian Church. Many relatives and friends were there to meet the sad cortege and to show their love and appreciation of the beloved dead and comfort the living. There, in the quiet country churchyard the body was tenderly laid to rest.

Mrs. Caruthers is survived by two sons, Messrs. H. Y. Caruthers and Jesse Caruthers, who have the sympathy of the community.
