Rex Monroe, 86, of Tolani Lake, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005.
He was born and raised in Tolani Lake. His maternal clan was the Tower House people and his paternal clan was the Banana Clan.
He worked many years with the railroad, the National Park Service in Page, and for the Bureau of Water Reclamation from 1961 to 1983. He retired from BWR and continued his life as a lifetime rancher, raising livestock and looking after his sheep.
In his younger days he enjoyed roping with his brothers, competing in rodeos in the Navajo Circuit.
Mr. Monroe was one of six brothers and three sisters, three of whom survive: Susan Tso, Bobby Monroe and Jack Monroe. He is also survived by children Helen Nee, Marjorie Eddie, Richard Monroe, Lenora Robbins, Rena Monroe, Clifford Monroe and Aaron Monroe; 37 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Anna Jane Monroe; and children Linda Williams, Arnold Monroe, Rex Monroe Jr. and Melvin Monroe.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Norvel Owens Mortuary Chapel, 914 E. Route 66, with burial in Citizens Cemetery, Flagstaff. A reception will follow after services at the Tolani Lake Chapter House.
