On January 14, 1968, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission near Yen Bai, Nhgia Lo Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. Remains Returned 08 April 1990 - ID Announced 14 November 1990. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

In April 1990, remains were recovered which were subsequently identified as being those of Stanley Henry Horne. In November of the same year, the U.S. officially announced his return home after 22 years.
