Anna Lodoiska Powell Kelly (1850-1927) was born in Towanda, Pennsylvania on July 15, 1850, the third child and second daughter of Benjamin Franklin (1820-1874) and Cynthia (Bailey, 1824-1867) Powell. An older brother, Ulyssis O’Meara Powell (1844-1848) died at not quite four, an older sister, Helen Laura Powell (1846-1903), died at age fifty six, and a younger brother, George Frank Powell (1855-1872) died when he was seventeen. Anna lived longer than all of her siblings. Anna’s father died when she was twenty four, and her mother passed away when she was just seventeen. Through her mother, Anna is related to the Gores, an old and prominent family in the area. Three of those Gore ancestors died at the famous Wyoming Massacre on July 3, 1878. It appears that Anna was born, raised and died in Towanda. On January 25, 1870, she married William Boss Kelly, a dentist in Towanda. The couple had five children, viz., Anna Rose Kelly Thompson (1871-1954), George Powell Kelly (1872-1905), Helen Josepha Kelly (1874-1948), Ralph William Kelly (1877-1949) and Frank Delano Kelly (1881-1936). It is interesting that the oldest child lived the longest. The loss of their son George must have been a tragic event in Anna’s and Williams’ lives. He died as a result of a fall from the second-floor balcony of the Stimson Hotel in Athens, Pennsylvania on October 19, 1905. Anna and William Boss had been married for forty five years when he died on July 17, 1915 in Towanda. Anne lived for twelve more years, dying of carcinoma of the liver on November 12, 1927 in Towanda. She was seventy seven years, three months and twenty seven days old at the time of her death. She is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Towanda with her husband, all of her children and the spouses of those children who married.
