This man was the father of Eliza Jane Menear Helms and Elizabeth Ann Menear Wolfe,
His name has been variously spelled and entered as Peter, Peyton, or Solomon P, Menear.
He was born at Preston Glades.

The image of the typewritten ledger page for the death entry of daughter Elizabeth says the father's name is Peter.
The image of the death certificate, which is handwritten, says Paton, the informant her half-sister, Nannie Ervin.
Previous compilations of histories list a Payton as the child of John and Catherine.
Assuming these were done from census records, began on that premise :

The only record I have ever found for a "Paton" Menear, as named on his daughter's death record (residence, Reedsville) - is in the household of John ( w. note of Sr above it); and Catherine Menear, 1850 census of Preston Virginia, 45th District, which has 54 written beside this. This record was done by asst. marshall G Cresap on 5th of August 1850.
There is another page by G Cresap, on 15th of July, 1850, also marked as the 45th district of Preston Virginia, in which the names of the same persons are written with one year difference in ages, as John and Katherine and Solomn P., instead of Payton.
To make it more confusing, the two pages give different neighboring families. One page gives SR by John's name, the other does not.
The three children in the household are the same on the two pages, varying slightly in the spellings and ages.
One page may have been a revision of the other, or the results of more than one canvasser.

* The only death record: 15 Oct 1854 Solomn P/ The son of John and Catherine Menear, aged 30, farmer, white, birth date 1824, born at Preston Glades, Preston county, Virginia
[Death B58077-5, WVEASY film # 34490 ref # 85] no image available (online search).

It is reasonable to conclude that Payton and Solomon P were the same person - in various compilations and listings of the children of John, the birthdates are vague and somewhat overlapping, with Peyton and Solomon listed as seperate persons with no other information.
His age is 23 or 24 on the 1850 census pages. John's age is 65 or 66 depending on which page is viewed (this differs from the 1778 birthdate for John in previous writings, by this census, his birthdate would have been closer to 1784/85).
{there were at least two other Solomon Menears}.

To conclude:
Payton was a farm laborer.
He was the husband of Mary.
Payton and Mary were in the household of John and Catherine for the 1850 census.
He is listed in most histories of the Menears as the son of John and Catherine Fortney Menear.
John and David Menear were living in Preston, Virginia in 1820; no township on the page. A Peter Menear was also living within this area in 1820.
David married Christine Fortney abt 1802 & John married Catherine abt 1803, in compiled lists - unknown if dates are accurate or verifiable. Their sister Leah is listed as having married Daniel Fortney.

Death and burial place unknown, members of this family lived near Reedsville, he may or may not have a marked grave.
Men of the Menear family stated that some of the Menears were buried at Zinn's Chapel (no markers have survived for them).
No marriage record has been found for him and Mary, it could have been lost in the courthouse fires.
Since the granddaughters of this generation, born in the 1880's, did not have their birthdates added to county ledgers until 1952 (revised) & we believe added this themselves - I don't anticipate having further knowledge of Payton before MY death record is posted.
Being Always Hopeful, though, we will certainly welcome any obituaries, bible record, receipts, letters, what your grannie said or a photograph of a grave marker.....the search is ongoing.
