Named for President Harrison who was elected the year of his birth, William dropped the Henry as a child and never used it. He was ordained in his early twenties and was a Confederate chaplain at Winder hospital in Richmond, VA during the Civil War. After the war he attended the Southern Baptist Seminary in Greenville, South Carolina and was one of its first graduates. He pastored churches in South Carolina, Alabama, and Virginia before moving to St. Louis where he owned and operated the Central Baptist newspaper until his death.
