Fairfield Woman Drowns Friday In Night Swim At Vineyard Lake

A Fairfield woman drowned Friday night while on a swimming party at the Jackson County park on Vineyard Lake. The victim was Mrs. Georgianna Burt, 38 years old, an employee at the Stubnitz-Greene Spring Corp.
Sheriff's officers at Jackson said Mrs. Burt was swimming with three friends, Virginia Solarski of 647 James Street and Earl Daniels of 118 1/2 East Church street, both of Adrian, and William Stutz of Clayton. They told officers they were swimming near the park at 11 p.m. when they discovered Mrs. Burt was not with them.
The three said they started searching and Mrs. Burt's body was recovered 20 minutes later in six feet of water, deputies said. Efforts to revive her were futile.
An autopsy was performed this morning at the Nichols Funeral Home in Michigan Center by Dr. J.H. Ahronheim of Jackson on the order of Coroner Edward Montgomery, also of Jackson. The autopsy showed Mrs. Burt died of drowning, Dr. Ahronheim said.
Mrs. Burt's three friends told the deputies and the coroner that they had no indication she was in trouble. They said they heard no cries for assistance or other alarms from Mrs. Burt.
Mrs. Burt was the former Georgianna Winifred Damon and was born in Adrian Nov. 5, 1921, the daughter of Aaron and Ella Damon. She had lived in Adrian and Fairfield all of her life. Mrs. Burt had been employed at Stubnitz-Greene Spring Corp. for the last 12 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Burt at home and Mrs. Robert (Bonnie) Clark of Route 1, Jasper; a son, Corp. John J. Burt with the U.S. Marines in Japan; her mother, Mrs. Ella Damon of Adrian; five brothers, Stanton Damon of Petersburg, Edward of Lupus, Mo., and Peter, Lonnie, and Harley Damon, all of Adrian, and five sisters, Mrs. Parker Osborn of Holgate, Ohio, Mrs. William LeRoux of Toledo, Mrs. Milo Snedeker of Adrian, Mrs. Gerald Clark of Adrian, and Mrs. Ray Yeagley of Sand Creek. Her father preceded Mrs. Burt in death.
The body is being returned to the Everiss Funeral Home where friends may call, beginning Sunday. Funeral arrangements were incomplete this morning, pending word from her son in Japan.

Drowns At Rim of Dropoff
Georgiana Burt of Fairfield Third Victim in County.

Georgiana Burt, of Fairfield, drowned late Friday night while swimming in the Vineyard lake.
Mrs. Burt is the third drowning victim in the county this year.
Sheriff's officers said she died shortly after 11 p.m. while she and three companions were swimming at the county park on the north side of the lake.
With her were William Stultz, 29, of Clayton, Virginia Starlski of Adrian, and Earl Daniels, also of Adrian.
FOUND FLOATING
Mr. Stultz told Sherriff's deputies and Brooklyn Officers that the group had been in the water about an hour.
"She had been swimming back and forth around the dropoff," Mr. Stultz said. "Then I didn't see her for a few minutes; so I called to the others who were closer to shore and asked if she was there. "When they said she wasn't, I ran up to my car and turned on the lights. I still couldn't see her; so I called to some people nearby and told them she was missing. "Two men went out in the water and I followed them out," he said.
"Then one of them hollered, 'Here she is'."
The two men, Clayton Maers of Wayne and Charles Konopaska of Northville, told officers they found Mrs. Burt about 17 yards from shore just beyond the dropoff. They said she was floating upright in the water with her head about two inches below the surface.
