You can call me Betty!" -- Elizabeth Marshall Grant of Rutland passed on Sunday, October 14, 2012, after a short bout of kidney failure. Betty will be remembered with grace and dignity by those that loved her and knew her to be "a real hoot!" She had always been an extremely fun woman whose family, friends and experiences were of supreme importance to her.
Born Elizabeth Marshall, she was one of three children that came from the marriage of Lawrence Parsons and Dorothy (Fleming) Marshall. Betty sprang into this world at Wesson Women's Hospital in Springfield, Mass., September 25, 1934, to join Larry and Judy in the family that lived in Longmeadow.
She attended local schools in her hometown, Classical High School in Springfield and Springfield College. There, she met Richard O. Hammond, was swept away and they married June 5, 1954. Brad and Sandi rounded out the family and they moved to and lived happily in a little home in the "wilderness" of Vermont ... (that would be Sargent Avenue, Rutland).
Betty worked as a secretary at Dana School, also monitoring the fun on the playground, for many years and then commanded the inner workings at Grace Congregational United Church of Christ for 22 years as administrative assistant. There, she expanded and embraced her circle of close friends. After retiring, she had trouble giving it up, and served proudly on the Diaconate, was a 48-year member of the church and enjoyed playing hand bells in the Tintinnabula.
She also was so very privileged to volunteer at the Rutland Regional Medical Center and the American Cancer Society and was a cancer survivor. Betty was married for a short time to Jack Kelly.
On November 24, 1984, she married a Scot by the name of Murray E. Grant. They deeply loved and took care of each other for over 26 years until Murray's passing February 2, 2011. Betty then continued to live a vivacious life in the Meadows community.
She is survived by her children, Bradford Marshall Hammond of Danby and Sandi Hammond Reardon and husband Tim of Rutland; stepchildren, Murray Grant II and wife Kathy of Huntington, Mass., Loraine Fanion and husband Jim of Westfield, Mass., and Heather Grant and partner Ray of Northfield, Vt.; nieces, Nancy "GoJoPo," Debbie and Lindy; nephews, Jim and Jeff; 10 grandchildren and their families, Lauren, Kyle, Amy, Jacob, Justin, Jonathan, Athena, Brenna, Casey and Delaney.
Betty was predeceased by a brother, Lawrence P. Marshall; a sister, Judith Axtell; and two grandsons, Christofer Grant and Jesse Finsen.
