Rev. James Nelson Barnes, age 78, died on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility.

The Blakely, GA native was a graduate of Damascus High School in Damascus, GA. He attended Berry College in Rome, GA and that's where he met his future wife of 55 years Hilda Faye Raley. Rev. Barnes served in the Alabama and Georgia National Guard. He was employed by RJ Reynolds, Stern Company before being called into the ministry of the Gospel. Rev. Barnes graduated from the Florida Baptist College (formerly Baptist Bible Institute), Graceville, FL. He was ordained in Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, GA. Brother Barnes served in numerous churches including; Liberty Baptist Church, Pansey, Al, Olive Branch Baptist Church, Ellabell, GA, Bonnybridge Baptist Church, Pt. Wentworth, GA, Friendship Baptist Church, Statesboro, GA, and Smyrna Baptist Church, Vienna, GA. After serving as Pastor of Friendship Baptist Church for 16 years, he served as interim at McDonald Baptist Church and Middleground Baptist Church, returning to Friendship to serve as Senior Adult Pastor for four years. He retired and was named Pastor Emeritus. Rev. Barnes served as Chaplain of the Day in the Georgia House of Representatives, and was named Chaplain of the Year by the Syl-View Health Care Center. He led weekly devotional at Gentilly Gardens and Willow Pond Assisted Living Facilities.

He was preceded in death by his parents Rev. John Nelson and Mathel Richardson Barnes, a brother Foy Barnes and a grandson David Nelson Barnes, Jr.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years Hilda Faye Raley Barnes of Statesboro; two daughters Donna Tyre of Statesboro and Susan Davis of Savannah; two sons David Barnes of Guyton and John Barnes of Stuart, FL; three brothers Coy Barnes (Pat) of Blakely, GA, Rev. Ernest Barnes (Carole) of Columbia, SC and Samuel Barnes of Hoffman Estates, IL; a sister Amelia Harris (Leonard) of Mableton, GA; six grandchildren Dennis (Tre') Glisson, Jonathan (Kacey) Davis, Heidi Glisson, Amanda (Raymond) Lindholm, Brittany Barnes and Rodney Tyre; four great grandchildren Leslie Lindholm, Madison Holland, Raymond Lindholm IV and Hayden Murhpy; several nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Osborne, Rev. Ernest Barnes, Rev. Pete Wall and Jonathan Davis officiating.

Interment will be in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be the ministers of the Ogeechee River Baptist Association.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.
