NICHOLS. — At Leadville, Colorado, Jan. 4th, 1888, Edgar Nichols, son of the late Lewis Nichols, of Kent, aged 59 years.

Lewis Nichols, one of the oldest, best known and most highly respected residents of the town of Kent, died at his home on Thursday evening of last week. His death was not unexpected as he had been steadily failing for nearly a week, and his friends plainly saw that the aged pilgrim was near his journey's end and that the release from earthly pain and suffering, for which he had prayed, would soon be vouchsafed. His years had numbered four score and ten, and until two and a half years ago when he was attacked with the dropsy, he had been active, and with the exception of small infirmities incident to his years, enjoyed fair health. Since that time he has been confined to the house and for some months to his bed.
Henry Nichols and Susannah Nichols had seven children, Joseph C., Lewis, Perry G., Henry B., Daniel R., Ruth, wife of Horace Smith; Elizabeth, wife of Jeremiah Hopkins and Susan. Lewis, whose death we chronicle in this notice, was their second-born. Daniel R. is now the only surviving member of the family. Lewis Nichols married Adah, daughter of Reuben Cole, and she died about twenty years ago. Five children were born to them, Chauncey, who lives in Indiana; Edgar, Edwin, Zillah, wife of Tillott Cole, of Carmel, and Henriette, wife, wife of J.M. Newman, of Yonkers. By a strange and remarkable coincidence, one of these sons, Edgar, who resided at Leadville, Colorado, was stricken with paralysis, and died the day before his aged father departed. On Wednesday his relatives here received intelligence of his death. Edwin, the other son resides on the homestead and took care of his father during his long sickness.
Mr. Nichols when in active life, followed farming as an occupation. He was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, industrious, upright and generous hearted. In early life he united with the Carmel Baptist Church and for sixty years led a consistent Christian life and was an active and valued member of the church. He lived a useful life, and the world in which he moved is better for the example his life afforded; honest and faithful in all things — a type of honorable and true manhood, full of years, he has passed away sincerely mourned by his children and other kindred and regretted by the church and the community in which he lived and acted so well his part in the great drama of life.
The funeral was largely attended at the Carmel Baptist Church on Sunday. Rev. Allen E. Light, pastor of the Kent Cliffs Baptist Church, conducted the services and the remains were interred in Kelley Cemetery.
