James Franklin "Jimmy" Daniell was born in Coolidge, Georgia. on 24 November 1911.
James F. learned to print in 1927 at "the "Daily Palm Leaf" in Fort Myers, Florida where he worked for Thomas Alva Edison, "The Wizard of Menlo Park." In August 1930, Jimmy moved to Winchester, Tennessee. He began printing at "The Truth and Herald." He met his future wife, Jean BEACHBOARD, in 1933 between her sophomore and junior years at college. For the school year '34-'35, he was the printing instructor at Baxter Seminary in Baxter, Tennessee. In 1935, he worked in Moultrie, Georgia at the "South Georgian" while living with his parents in Murphy, Georgia. From 1937 to 1942 he worked at the"Jacksonville Journal." His house there became his and Jean's first home.
On 30 August 1940, he married Jean Porter BEACHBOARD in Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee. One wedding present they received was a pressed glass stemless cake plate. The edges curve up and are scalloped and has the "moon and stars" pattern. This cake plate previously belonged to Bob BURGESS, brother of Mary Ann Burgess BAKER, and it was given as a wedding gift to Jean and James F. DANIELL, Sr. by Mary Melvina Baker DANIELL, wife of Charles Henry DANIELL and a daughter of Osborn and Mary BAKER. Jimmy and Jean gave the cake plate to their son, Dr. and Mrs. James F. (Sandra) DANIELL, Jr.
After enlisting in the Navy Reserves on April 1, 1942, he went to boot camp at Norfolk, Virginia. He and Jean lived "on the beach" in Virginia. After Guard School training at Little Creek, Virginia, he was detailed to run a new off-set printing office there. In 1944 he was transferred to Washington, D.C. and attached to the USS Dauntless, the flagship of Commander-in-Chief, Admiral E. J. King. Jimmy was a security printer producing confidential, secret, and top-secret materials. His office was transferred to the executive office of the Secretary of the Navy. Within 21 months, Jimmy was promoted seven grades.
In March 1946, Jimmy was discharged. Returning to civilian life, he moved his family to Winchester, Tennessee in August. He and Jean lived at the home of Jean's aunt and uncle, Anna L. CLARK and Coach Bernie H. MOORE at 309 1st Avenue N.W. The Henderson-Clark-Moore antebellum home has been in the family since 1860. Using his printing experience before and during the war, Jimmy opened shop in Winchester as "Daniell, The Printer" on December, 6, 1946. He introduced off-set printing and four-color process to Franklin County, printing quality nursery catalogs throughout the Southeast. At the American Nurserymen's Convention, his Tennessee Valley Nursery's catalog was singled out as being superior. The whole family and friends helped a catalog time. Jean served as bookkeeper. All three of his children, James, Jr., Betty, and Jean, worked in the print shop.
Jimmy, Jean, and family moved to a story and a half Cape Cod style house built by Jean's father, Z. P. BEACHBOARD at 160 Old Huntsville Road [the old Stagecoach Road]. Jimmy and Jean raised their children there and lived out their lives in their home on the farm.
October 1, 1979, Jimmy sold "Daniell, The Printer" to Kay and Tommy Grant.
While enjoying their retirement, Jimmy and Jean were active in the Winchester Church of Christ. Jean died November 9, 2002.
