February 23, 2010:

Martha Lutisha "Nanny" Baise Qualls entered Heaven and was reunited with her beloved Ralph "PaPaw" on February 23, 2010. She has resided at the Fulton Manor Care Center for the last year.

Martha was born December 6, 1916 near Auxvasse, Missouri, the daughter of Sarah Margaret "Maggie" Robinson Baise and Clarence Elwood "Elmer" Baise. She was one of the 26 graduates in the Auxvasse High School class of 1935. On September 15, 1937 she married Ralph Clifford Qualls and almost 51 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on September 7, 1988.

In 1943 Martha and Ralph went to work together at Lays Cafe in Kingdom City. Martha waited tables ans Ralph worked in the station. The following year they moved from the country into Fulton. They bought a home on Oak Street and soon went to work together at the International Shoe Factory. In 1960 after the shoe factory closed. Martha and Ralph went to work at Fulton State Hospital, she at the Acute Hospital and he at Biggs. Martha retired December 31, 1976.

During their married life, Martha and Ralph enjoyed a quiet life together, taking summer vacations, fishing,gardening, mushroom hunting and for a time raising a few cattle and chickens.They enjoyed spending time with their family and friends.

The 20 years Martha lived on her own, she stayed active gardening, both flowers and vegetables, crocheting afghans, working crossword puzzles and feeding the birds. She loved animals, especially cats. Martha read the Buble and continued Ralph's daily journaling for years. She was a devout Christian and had attended Ebenezer Baptist Church. Southside Baptist Church, and in recent Central Christian Church. "Nanny was fiercely independent and continued to drive until she was 89 years old. She valued hard work, helping others and being as good a neighbor as she always said she was blessed with.

Martha is survived by her son, John Qualls, Columbia, Missouri; daughter, Bonnie and husband Bob Williams of Fulton; seven grandchildren, Matt and Drew Qualls, Columbia, Missouri, Ben Qualls of Centralia, Missouri, Mark and wife, Ana Stiers, of Mesa Arizonia ; Michael Qualls and Lisa Barks of Fulton. and Debra Maddox Kirchhof of Fulton with whom she shared a beautiful bond for all of Deb's life. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Chance and wife Jane Kirchhof Iowa City, Iowa. Sara Barks of Fulton, Jeremiah Barks of Montana, Jarel and Victoria Stiers and Laura and Luis Garcia, all of Mesa, Arizona and Josh and Eric Qualls of Fulton, two great great grandchildren, Isaiah Barks and Ozlynn Potts; two cousins, Jim and wife Carol Cornelius of Fulton, and Sandra Holtkamp of Mexico Missouri.

In addition to her parents and husband; her first grandchild, Kenny Hammack, son and daughter in law, Bob and Irene Qualls and a foster sister, Kathy Lules preceded her in death.

Celebration of life services will be 1p.m. on Saturday February 27, 2010 at Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton. with Pastor Bruce Williamson officiating. Visitation will be from 12p.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Interment will be at Auxvasse Cemetery.
