John F. "Jack" Craig, 80, Altoona, died Tuesday at his home after a brief illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late William J. and Edna (Farabaugh) Craig. He married Sara J. Cassarly on June 9, 1953, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona, and she died Sept. 3, 1995.
Surviving are five children: Karen Fields and husband, Mick, Gary and wife, Louann, and Sheryl Moyer and husband, Ron, all of Altoona, David and wife, Michelle, of Gloucester, Va., and Tracy Campisi and husband, Rosario, of York; 11 grandchildren: John Francis Craig II, Patrick Craig, Michael Bender, Zachary Shannon, Ryan Craig, Mallory Craig, Jenna Campisi, Jamie Craig, Dorian Campisi, Sara Craig and Adriana Campisi; a great-grandchild, Rowan Jo Craig; and eight siblings: Ann Rhodes, Janet Gensamer, Charles and Donald, all of Altoona, Richard of Washington, Pa., Joan Wills of Curwensville, Vince of York and Judy Baird of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: William and Robert.
Jack graduated from St Mark's School and Altoona Catholic High School, and he served in the U.S. Army. He retired in 1978 as a detective with the Altoona Police Department with 22 years of service. He was 1971 Policeman of the Year. He also worked at Craig Fencing, where he was instrumental in the success of the business. Previously, he had been a self-employed truck driver, owner and operator for 13 years.
Jack was a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, Altoona. He was a lifetime member of the Bavarian Aid Society, Swiss Club, Buccinese Society and St. Therese Choir. He enjoyed water skiing, bowling and basketball and attending the activities in which his grandchildren participated.
Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at Jones Funeral Home, where a vigil for the deceased will be celebrated during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, Monsignor Anthony B. Little officiating. Committal rites will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
