Serena was briefly married to Hughes Bowling before dying due to complications in childbirth. They were united in matrimony on November 15th, 1913, in Perry County, Kentucky.

The birth & death years inscribed on the stone were only approximations. Two death certificates for her have since been discovered, both listing her death date as May 12th, 1914. However, on one of these, her death date is written in again on the birthdate space, and on the other, June 10th, 1894 is given as her birthdate. This conflicts with her 1900 Census record which lists her birth month as December of 1895. These are the only documents thus far found that indicate a birthdate for her, so with two quite conflicting records, her exact date of birth remains unclear.

A memorial stone was also placed for Serena next to her parents' gravesite at Irvin Hill Cemetery. You can view the memorial page for her cenotaph here.
