Major Joseph A. Craft, DSN 0425, was hired as a civilian "Laborer" for the department on 03/01/1940. On 12/08/1940 he was promoted to "Motor Service Attendant" and held this position until 11/14/1942 when he terminated his job with the department and entered the United States Coast Guard for military service during WWII.

After the war he was rehired by the department and commissioned as a Police Officer on 11/16/1945. After the academy he served in a variety of assignments. They were the 11Th, 6Th, Secret Service Division, 6Th, 4Th, 12Th, 5Th, Mobile Reserve Section, 4Th, Bureau of Service's, and finally the Bureau of Field Operations. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on 11/01/1951, Sergeant on 11/01/1953, Lieutenant on 08/01/1958, Captain on on 02/01/1963, and finally to the rank of Major on 12/20/1964. When Major Craft retired on 01/16/1987 he had a total of 46.88 years of faithful and dedicated service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

Beloved husband of Carol A. Craft (nee Roach); dear father of Joseph A. (Elizabeth) Craft, III, Jennifer (J. Andrew) Craft Stann, Michael B. and Timothy P. Craft; dear grandfather of Joseph A. Craft, IV; our dear brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle and friend.

Services: Funeral from KUTIS AFFTON Chapel, 10151 Gravois, Sat., Sept. 23, 9 a.m. to St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church for 9:30 a.m. Mass. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.

Mr. Craft served in the U.S. Coast Guard during W.W. II. He retired as a Major after 46 years of service in the St. Louis Police Department. He then served for 16 years as Deputy Sheriff for St. Louis County.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Backstoppers or St. Anthony Hospice Program appreciated. Visitation Fri. 4-9 p.m.
