Paula E. Ashley, 49, of Akron died Saturday, April 24, 2010 after an inspirational three year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Waterbury, Conn. on May 23, 1960, she is survived by her husband of almost 21 years, John E. Ashley; daughters, Rachel (14) and Gabrielle (11); parents, Paul and Esther Balko of Wolcott, Conn.; sisters, Lydia Davis of Jackson, Mich., Victoria Griffin of Shorewood, Ill. and Priscilla Jezuit of Wheaton, Ill.; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A 1980 graduate of Mattatuck Community College, Waterbury, Conn., Paula was a successful executive secretary in Chicago and Akron until 1995 when she left to begin raising her daughters. Paula later returned to work part-time until last year at the Nervous Dog Coffee Shop and Portage Country Club, persevering through chemo-therapy and several surgeries. Shortly before her death she realized her dream of writing a children's book with the publication of Have You Ever Been Hugged By A Spider?
A devoted and dedicated Bible Student; Paula loved spending time with others who studied the bible. She and John regularly opened their home to guests for bible study, entertaining and family gatherings. Paula often tutored her girls in their musical and acting activities and enjoyed watching them perform. In her rare moments of spare time, Paula played piano, gardened and made crafts. She will be sorely missed by her friends and family who were touched by her devotion, hard work, common sense and love.
