Helen S. Achtzehn, of Elizabeth Township, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009. She was born in West Newton, the daughter of the late Arthur E. and Olivia Ulander Backstrom, and was wife of the late Herman B. Achtzehn. She was a member of Boston United Methodist Church and the Women's Society there, Mt. Vernon AARP, Elizabeth Township Historical Society, Elizabeth Township Senior Citizens, McKeesport YWCA, and the McKeesport Garden Club. Helen was a 1934 graduate of McKeesport High School and had worked for the former J.C. Penney Co. at Eastland Shopping Center. She is survived by a son, Gary B. (Barbara) Achtzehn, of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie L. Wiskeman, who died Sept. 2, 2001; a grandson, Robert Wayne Wiskeman, who died March 23, 2002; great-great-granddaughter, Brielle Lou; brother, George Backstrom; and a sister, Virginia Hocko. Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the GILBERT FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 6028 Smithfield St., Boston, Elizabeth Township. Service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Boston United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth B. Jones, officiating. Interment will follow at the West Newton Cemetery.
