Walter E. Beard, 87, of Richmond, died Monday, June 29, 2009, in Pinehurst Village, Centerville.
He was born in Carlos on Dec. 12, 1921, the son of Harry and Myra (Hunnicutt) Beard. He lived most of his life in the Economy and Hagerstown area.
Walter served with the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, was a retired employee of Dana Corp., Hagerstown, and had been a farmer and carpenter.
He is survived by five children, Robert Beard (Rhonda), Barbara Corwin (Andy), Ronald Beard, Richard Beard (Debbie) and Valerie Shelton (Max); seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Beard (Betty) and Chester Beard; two sisters, Esther Ankorom and Charlotte Vanover; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Phyllis Mae (Wilber)Beard(1933-1964) and his second wife, Alice E(Rineheart)Beard(1924-2004), ; three brothers, John Beard(1916-1995), Harry Beard(1919-2003) and Raymond Beard(1926-1928); two sisters, Bessie Shook(1914-2009) and Frances Wise(1913-1994).
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 3, in Culberson Funeral Home, Hagerstown. Rev. Sue Cartee will officiate. Burial will be in Williamsburg Cemetery, where military graveside services will be conducted. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association.
