Sam was born in Cleveland, OK. He spent many summers of his youth working on the farm of Dorothy and Lloyd McCorkle near Meridian, OK. It was there he met his wife of 48 years. Between their meeting and their marriage at First Southern Baptist of Guthrie, Sam spent 4 years in the US Army in Germany.

After marriage, Sam and Margaret moved to Guymon, where Sam partnered with Chester Leach in a welding business and Margaret was a 4-H home economist. They moved back to Guthrie in 1969. There Sam embarked on a long career as a self-employed welder and developed a lifelong passion as a part-time rancher. He ended his career as a pipeline welding inspector.

Sam was active in the First Southern Baptist Church for many years. He partnered with Pete Cole to build the well-known arch bridge at Falls Creek encampment. He worked many volunteer hours on projects both at church and around the Guthrie community. He is preceded in death by his parents John Henry and Ruth Stearman and brothers George, Lou, and Hank. He is survived by wife Margaret, son Scott (Cecelia), daughter Melanie (Ron Kreutzer), and grandson Sam. He is also survived by brother Ray, sisters Ethel Bowdrie, Ruth Wilkinson, and Katie Vaughn, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 5, 2012 at First Southern Baptist Church with Pastor David Nolen officiating. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery.
