KINGSTON- Ella Francis (Childs) Lindsay, a long time resident of Kingston, departed this life on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, after a short illness. She was born on July 21, 1921 in South Boston, Virginia. She was daughter of the late William and Louise Childs. She had a full and rich life. She was 90 years old. A very important aspect of her life was her faith in Jesus Christ. Ella was a committed believer and actively worshipped the Lord at River View Missionary Baptist Church for over 70 years. At her church she served in many different capacities: a choir member, an usher, a missionary, a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, and a church mother. She served for many years as the scholarship committee chairperson where she encouraged young people to get an education. One of her proudest accomplishments was earning her GED at the age of 72. Ella's faith walk took her beyond the walls of the church and into her community. Her home always had an open door and anyone could find a good hot meal and a place to stay. She had a way of making everyone feel like they were family. She was affectionately called "Mother Ella". She worked as a lunch room monitor at J.F. Kennedy Elementary School. In 1967, Ella was one of the first employees at M. Clifford Miller Jr. High School, where she worked as a hall monitor and cafeteria aide. She was a 4H leader for several years, and she started the first community watch program in her neighborhood. She was an election poll worker for over thirty years. Numerous young people, for whom she was a surrogate mother, have themselves become parents, but they never forget "Mother Ella". On June 10, 1945, Ella married James P. Lindsay. She was predeceased by her husband and children: Thomas B. Childs, Mary Torres, and Zelma Harrison. Survivors include her five children: the Reverend James (wife Dorothy) Childs, Carol (husband Bert) Henderson, Ronald (wife Nadine) Lindsay, Anthony (wife Julie) Lindsay, Gregory (wife Laurie) Lindsay; the spouses of her deceased children, Sherry Childs, Reyes Torres, Jr., and Eric Harrison; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews too numerous to mention. Friends may call Sunday Oct. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Pointe of Praise Family Life Center 243 Hurley Avenue, Kingston. A final viewing will take place Monday Oct. 3 from 10 to 11 a.m. with services following at 11 a.m. at the church. Pastor James Childs will officiate, Pastor Harold Jolly will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be in Montrepose Cemetery Kingston. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Ulster County Multi Service Center (Kings Kids Scholarship) P.O.
