Actress Jad Capelja rose to fame at the age of 16 in an 1981 Australian film called Puberty Blues which was based on the 1979 book of the same name. It was a true story written by Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Carey of them growing up in the 1970's on Cronulla Beach New South Wales and their acceptance into the surfing "In Crowd".
Her second movie which she starred with John Blake was Freedom.
Jad emigrated to Australia from Czechoslavia at the age of 5 with her parents Stevan and Maria Capelja.
Jad was full of artistic and creative ideas and was always wanting to try out new ideas in film and writing. Most of all she wanted to be a great actress and wanted to study seriously at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) but never made it. Audition after audition failed to get any more roles which was hard for her to accept. It was during this time she started to became delusional and was certain someone was trying to stop her from becoming the star she could be. She became more and more psychotic and was eventually diagnosed with severe paranoid schizophrenia. Her family felt that her abuse of marijuana and alcohol was the cause of an imbalance that caused her mental illness.
Eventually her family were able to get her to participate in a treatment program and after 2 years she seemed to be improving when out of the blue she committed suicide.
She left behind her ex husband Richard Muecke and a their son Miles and good friend and co-star of Puberty Blues Nell Schofield as well as her parents and many friends.
Jad now has the peace that eluded her in life.
