SERVICES SET FOR SWAMPSCOTT COUPLE KILLED IN TWO-CAR COLLISION IN SALEM

Services will be held Monday for an elderly Swampscott couple who died in an auto crash on Thursday night.

Merle and Gertrude Burgess of Stetson avenue, died in a two-car collision on Highland avenue in Salem. Mrs. Burgess was 81; Mr. Burgess 84.

Mr. and Mrs. Burgess lived in Swampscott for 53 years and celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on May 24. Both attended the Church of the Holy Name in Swampscott.

Merle W. Burgess was born in Waltham on Aug. 25, 1895 and attended Malden public schools. Mr. Burgess made show patterns for Quality Pattern of Boston for 20 years, retiring in 1966. He was a 50-year member of the Bethlehem Masonic Lodge in Lynn and a member of the Leon E. Abbott American Legion Post 57 of Swampscott.

A World War I veteran, he served in France as an Army corporal.

Gertrude E. (Juengling) Burgess was born in Boston on Sept. 10, 1898 and attended Boston public schools. Mrs. Burgess was a member of the Marie Joy Guild of the Church of the Holy Name.

Mr. and Mrs. Burgess leave two sons, Richard M. Burgess of Revere and David M. Burgess of Lynnfield; a daughter, Virginia L. Draper of Bedford; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Burgess leaves three sisters, Olga Sterr of Brockton, Rosa Shaw of Lynnfield and Aurelia Kammler of Needham.

A funeral Mass will be said Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Name, Swampscott. Burial will be at the Swampscott Cemetery.
