RETIRED PASTOR BURNED FATALLY. Rev. A. H. Anthony Dies in Hospital Of Injury Received At His Residence. FUNERAL TO BE THURSDAY. Tragedy stalked their home during another sleepless night for the Rev. Alex Hunter Anthony, 77, and his wife, Mrs. Lelia Hunter Anthony, 68, when the fire ignited the clothing of the husband and burned him fatally. The Rev. Mr. Anthony, a retired minister of the Disciples of Christ, died at 9:15 o'clock Tuesday morning in St. Edward's Hospital. The accident occurred at 3:20 a.m. at the residence, 2131 Morton avenue. Suffering from asthma and heart trouble, the couple sat in chairs during the night to catch what little sleep might be in store for them. While dozing momentarily, Mrs. Anthony was awakened by screams. She found her husband standing in front of her enveloped in flames. Despite her enfeebled condition, the wife, rushed to the bathroom, procured water and dashed it on the victim. The flames were extinguished but not until the Rev. Mr. Anthony's lower body and legs had been burned to a crisp. When firemen arrived at the scene they found the man on the floor with his wife standing beside him, suffering from slight burns on the hands and severe shock. Mrs. Anthony was reported to be in a serious condition from nervous prostration at the hospital. Whether the victim started to place coal in the stove and sparks ignited his clothing, or whether he fell against it, could not be ascertained. A mattress nearby and other household goods were damaged approximately $60. The Rev. Mr. Anthony retired from the active ministry twelve years ago. He enjoyed unusual health up until a few years ago. He once demonstrated his agility before a high school class by leaping into the air several times during an address. During the World War, which claimed the life of his son, Harold Anthony, the Rev. Mr. Anthony served as a Y.M.C.A. secretary in camps in the South. The son was killed on a field of battle in France. Both the minister and his wife were highly devoted to the cause of patriotism. Despite her sorrow, Mrs. Anthony wore the Gold Star with no little pride. Surviving, besides the widow, is one brother, Harold Anthony, of Miami, Fla. The Rev. Mr. Anthony was a member of the Masonic Order at Central City, Ky., and was also affiliated with the Knights Templar. The body is at the Seabrook Chapel, East Market and Twelfth streets, where funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. - New Albany Tribune 02 Mar 1937 [third degree burns]
