Death of Ellis Ashley

Ellis D. Ashley, a highly respected and wealthy farmer of this neighborhood, died at his home northwest of Gibson City last Monday morning from heart trouble, from which he had been a suffeter for about five years.

Mr. Ashley had recently returned home from a trip to Shelby county, and was only confined to his bed about a week before his death.

Ellis. D. Ashley was born in Tonica La Salle on Sept. 24 1862. His early childhood and young manhood was spent on a farm. He attended the district school near Tonica and also the public school in Tonics.

He came to Sullivant township, Ford county with his father's family in 1882. On Jan. 5, 1886, he was married to Miss Minnie Schaefer of Granville, Putnam county, Ill.

The couple moved into the home in Sullivant township which the groom had made ready for occupancy, and where they had since resided. To this union were born six children: Lizzie May, Ella (who died in young girlhood) Harlan O., Lourin S., Amos W., Joseph D. all of whom reside at home except the first daughter, who is now Mrs. Rolla Nieswander, and who lives in a new home recently erected on the home farm.

Mr. Ashley was severely injured five years ago. A horse which he was riding stepped into a post-hole, the horse fell and rolled upon Mr. Ashley's leg, and so injured him as to cause heart trouble.

Since the accident Mr.. Ashley made many trips to the south and the southwest with the hopes of regaining his health, but all in vain. Two weeks ago last Friday be returned from one of his farms in Shelby county feeling very ill. On the following Wednesday he took to his bed, and died at 3:45 o'clock Monday morning, May, 2.

Funeral services were held it the home seven miles northwest of town at 1:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Day of Sibley officiated.

The deceased was a man of sterling honesty. He made no enemies but was respected by all who knew him. He amused considerable wealth and owned a section of land where he resided on farm in Shelby county and many acres in Louisiana.
