Beloved family man, teacher and friend, Warner Thomas Dahlberg, passed from this life early Tuesday, September 25th, after weeks of complications following knee surgery. Warner was born May 27, 1936 in Bryan, TX, the son of A&M professor Frank I. "Ike" Dahlberg and music teacher, Jewel Garland Thomas Dahlberg. He lived in Bryan through his school years, graduating from Bryan High School in 1954 and spending many summers at the family ranch near Blanket, TX. Beloved family man, teacher and friend, Warner Thomas Dahlberg, passed from this life early Tuesday, September 25th, after weeks of complications following knee surgery.
Warner was born May 27, 1936 in Bryan, TX, the son of A&M professor Frank I. "Ike" Dahlberg and music teacher, Jewel Garland Thomas Dahlberg. He lived in Bryan through his school years, graduating from Bryan High School in 1954 and spending many summers at the family ranch near Blanket, TX. He graduated from Southwestern University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre in 1958. He later earned a Masters in theatre with a minor in textiles from Michigan State University.
While at Southwestern Warner met and fell in love with Bettie Anne Johnson. They were married in August of 1959, establishing a household filled with food, music and learning.
After teaching in Taylor, Houston, Carthage and Bryan, Warner and Bettie moved to Austin with their three children in 1969 where he joined the staff of Stephen F. Austin High School. He finished his career at Austin High, having taught combinations of Theatre, Speech and English, until his retirement in 1992. In retirement he was an active member of the Austin Retired Teacher's Association and Foundation, a volunteer for North Austin Care Givers and a pillar of Crestview United Methodist Church.
Warner was preceded in death by his wife Bettie. He is survived by his siblings, Walter and Genelle Dahlberg, Kiver and Martha Dahlberg of Dallas and his brother-in-law, William Johnson, of Oklahoma City, as well as his children, Christina Dahlberg Gilmore, of Austin, Frank and Polly Dahlberg of Tampa Bay FL, and Edith and Pete Nordloh of Houston, his grandchildren, Sam Nordloh, Ben Nordloh, Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fritchman and his great grandchildren Henry and Tallulah Fritchman.
The family will receive guests at a visitation to be held on Thursday, September 27, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, Texas. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 28, 2012 at Crestview Methodist Church, 1300 Morrow Austin, Texas 78757. Committal services will follow at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Warner's name to the ARTA Foundation c/o Linda Harvey, 5602 Westminster Dr., Austin, TX 78723.
