Mary Jane Ott Allen, 89, beloved mother, devoted wife, prominent civic leader and devout Episcopalian, died November 28, 1999, at a local nursing home in Burnet, Texas.
She was born October 4, 1910, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, to Ralph Chesley Ott and Jane Schaufert Ott. Mrs. Allen was baptized and confirmed at Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis, Missouri. She graduated from Springfield High School of Springfield, Missouri, in 1929. She immediately enrolled at Drury University; she was a member of the Debating Team, Oratorical Society, Skiff (known today as the Mortar Board), Zeta Tau ALpha Sorority, the Cosmopolitan Club, The Junior League of Women Voters and the Hollisterites, which was the college division of the Y.W.C.A. She graduated from Drury in 1933 with a degree in History and Social Science.
While at Drury College she met George Scott Allen, who she later married on August 11, 1933, at Christ Church Cathedral in Springfield, Missouri. After their marriage, they lived in New Orleans on a houseboat, while Mr. Allen attended medical school at Tulane University. This started a lifelong committment of support for her husband's medical career, which included moving to various military bases to be near him while he was training for the Army, then later traveling to many medical conventions throughout the United States. While Dr. Allen served as C.O. Medical Battalion, XX Corps, III Army under General Patton in Europe, Mrs. Allen and her two children, Alice and Thrasher, moved back to Springfield, Missouri, to live with Miss Alice Thrasher.
The Allen family moved to Burnet, Texas, in 1938, where Mrs. Allen helped her husband establish his medical practice and the Allen Clinic. She immediately plunged into social and civic activities being a charter member and organizer of the Burnet County Library, an honorary member and officer of the Burnet Pen Chat Club (the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs) and was instrumental in organizing the Girl Scouts in Burnet. Mrs. Allen was also a member and officer of the Republican Women, member of the American Association of University Women in New Orleans and Dallas, the Burnet P.T.A. and the Burnet Church Women. Most important to her were her life-long activities in the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany as a teacher, Chairman of Christian Education, Diocesan Delegate, Altar Guild member, Vestry member, treasurer of the Memorial Fund, and friend to many priests and bishops throughout her life.
Mrs. Allen has five children, Charles Thrasher Allen and his wife, Judy Edgar Allen, of Burnet, Alice Ott Allen Caragonne, of New York City, Jonathan Ott Allen and his wife, Glenna Orman Allen, of Mason Neck, Virginia, and Sarah Hathaway Allen McGinty and her husband, David W. McGinty, of Burnet. She was the devoted grandmother to eleven grandchildren, Chrysoula Ann Caragonne, Myra Allen Habbit, Mary Pauline Allen, Rebecca Ott Allen Steffen, Jonathan Cain Allen, George Scott Allen III, Melissa Rae Allen, Joshua Mason McGinty, Judith Allen McGinty and Charles Chesley Allen McGinty. She also had six great-grandchildren and many godchildren. She is survived by her brother-in-law, James H. Allen, of Menard.
Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George Scott Allen Sr., her son, George Scott Allen, Jr., grandson George Scott Constatine Caragonne and her sister, Arcea Ott Geanette.
Visitation will occur Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Edgar Funeral Home, 109 North Main, Burnet, Texas.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 4, 1999, at The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Burnet at 10:00 a.m.
She will be interred next to her husband at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet County. The Reverend Theodore Hervey will be officiating.
There will be a reception in honor of Mrs. Allen following the graveside service at her home, 802 South Main Street, Burnet.
