US Army General. He rose in rank to become the Commanding General at the US Army Materiel and Readiness Command (now US Army Materiel Command (AMC)) from August 1981 until June 1984. Toward the end of World War II he enlisted in the US Army and was soon accepted to the US Military Academy at West Point, New York and graduated in 1949 with a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the Field Artillery. After serving in various staff assignments, his key assignment include the Commander of the 36th Artillery Group, US Army, Europe (January 1969 to July 1970), Executive Officer, Office of the Chief of Research and Development, Headquarters US Army, Washington DC, (July 1970 to June 1971), Director, Research and Analysis Directorate, Civil Operations and Revolutionary Development Support, US Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (August 1971 to August 1972), Director of Developments, Office, Chief of Research and Development, HQ US Army, Washington DC (September 1972 to May 1974), Director of Weapon Systems, Office, Deputy Chief of Staff for Research, Development and Acquisition, Headquarters US Army, Washington DC (May 1974 to October 1976), Commanding General, US Army Field Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma (October 1976 to October 1977), and Deputy Chief of Staff for Research, Development and Acquisition, Headquarters US Army, Washington DC (October 1977 to August 1981). In August 1981 he became the Commanding General, US Army Materiel Development and Readiness Command in Alexandria, Virginia and he retired in this position in June 1981 with 35 years of continuous military service. Among his military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (with 2 oak leaf clusters), the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal (with 1 oak leaf cluster), the World War II Victory Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. His military education includes the Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, the Armed Forces Staff College at Norfolk, Virginia, and Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Washington DC. He received a Masters Degree in 1958 from Columbia University in New York City, New York, preceding a faculty assignment at West Point. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of Akron in 1982. After his military retirement, he served as Chairman of the US Field Artillery Association from 2002 until shortly before his death at the age of 77.
