Leola LeSueur Jennings 1903 - 2005

Three days before the Wright Brothers first flight at Kitty Hawk, Leola LeSUEUR JENNINGS was born to Anna ANDERSON LeSUEUR and James Warren LeSUEUR in St. Johns, Arizona.

The oldest of eight children, Leola was from the beginning to the end beautiful, poised, smart, talented, kind and industrious. Leola grew up in Mesa, Arizona, where her pioneer family was in the cotton and mercantile businesses.

She graduated from Tempe Normal School (ASU) where she obtained her teacher's certification. An able pianist, she taught music and penmanship-skills that she excelled in throughout her life.

In 1927, Leola married Renz L. JENNINGS, a young attorney from Taylor, Arizona. They had a loving marriage that lasted until his death in 1983. They enjoyed many things together but nothing quite as much as square dancing or whirling around a dance floor.

They worked together to improve their community and raise their four children, Julienne, Joyce, Elaine, and Renz D.

A lifelong Democrat, Leola helped on her husband's judicial and political campaigns and later baked and delivered her famous pecan pies to raise funds for her son's campaigns for the Legislature and Corporation Commission.

Leola had a passion for learning and took college classes into her 90s to keep her mind sharp. It worked! She spoke Spanish and traveled widely - to Europe, China, Japan, Mexico, South America, Russia and to her ancestral homelands in Sweden and France. On Leola's 100th birthday in 2003, she showed what clean living, eating your vegetables, having a good attitude, getting a good night's sleep and exercise can do, by touching her palms flat on the floor with her legs straight ... a feat she was able to do until near the end.

Leola was the epitome of grace, stamina, courage, and discipline. She was kind, generous and witty. She survived cancer twice, but not three times. She died at 101 peacefully at home with family and friends at her side.

Survivors include: son Renz; daughter Joyce JENNINGS; sister Margaret STEVERSON; daughter-in-law Dianna; grandchildren Melissa SHERLOCK, Allen MURDOCK, Jay MURDOCK, Kirsten WALSTEDT, Steven JOHNSON, Jennifer JOHNSON, Linda WILLIAMS; and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by her husband Renz L., daughters Julienne RUNNELS and Elaine JOHNSON, brothers James (Kay), Frank, Marlow LeSUEUR and sisters Nadine JOHNSON, Louise GAYLORD and Nellie Jo STAFFORD. Services at the Central Ward LDS Church at 2nd Street and Ashland, Phoenix.
