Col. (Ret.) Frank Michael Kulik (Mike), U.S.A. died on September 20, 2012.
He was born 3 November 1928, in Chicopee, Massachusetts, to Frank and Lena (Cygan) Kulik. He was president of his senior class at Cathedral High School in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Mike and his wife (Peggy Miller) Kulik of West Sommerville, Massachusetts, met at Boston College. He earned a B.S./B.A. degree in Industrial Management as a distinguished Military graduate (ROTC) and received a regular Army commission in 1951. He received his Master of Science in Management from the University of Arizona. He graduated from the Artillery Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Courses, Command and General Staff College, Armed Forced Staff College and the U.S. Army War College (1973). He also had a Prefix 5 as a Nuclear Weapons Analyst.
Peggy was in the first nursing school class at B.C. It was a very comprehensive 5 year course. She earned a B.S.N. degree. When Mike returned from a 19 month combat tour in Korea, they were married October 31, 1953.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five children; Mary K. Barker, of Boise, Idaho, (born at Fort Meade, Maryland), Patricia K. Noga, of New Milford, Connecticut, (born at Nurnburg, Germany), Michael F. Kulik, of Norwell, Massachusetts, (born at Nurnburg, Germany), Stephanie K. Vnuk, of Sedona, Arizona, (born at Fort Sill, Oklahoma), and Mark S. Kulik, of Cottonwood, Arizona, (born at Fort Levenworth, Kansas).
Col. Kulik was blessed with 13 grandchildren; Katherine Noga Ellsworth and Lt. Justin Ellsworth, Abigal Barker DelFico and Drax DelFico, Taylor Kulik, Sarah Kulik, Victoria Vnuk, Christopher Barker, Douglas Noga, Nicholas Noga, Jason Kulik, Andrew Kulik and Ryan Kulik, and two great grand-children; Cyro DelFico and Andrew Ellsworth.
While in Korea, he commanded a self-propelled battery followed by a tour as liaison officer with the 1st Marine Airwing from the Korean DMZ south. He was the commander of a self-propelled Artillery company of the Third Army Calvary Regiment for three years in Germany, patrolling the Czech border. Some of his other assignments include two Pentagon tours, one in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff Personnel, the other in the Office of Personnel Operations of the Army. He was Department Chairman and Professor of Military Science at the University of Notre Dame. He was the first Director of Race Relations, Equal Opportunity, and Equal Employment Opportunity. The Division Chief of Training in ROTC Directorate of Training and Doctrine Command in Fort Monroe, Virginia. He was senior advisor in the central highlands of Vietnam during the TET offensive of 1968 and then on his second tour in Vietnam in 1969 he commanded a self-propelled filed Artillery Battalion and Artillery Group on the DMZ in Vietnam in support of the Third and First Marine Divisions, as well as other units.
Col. Kulik served a three year tour where he was concurrently the senior Army Advisor to the State Adjutant General of the Massachusetts Army National Guard and senior Advisor to the commanding General of the 26th Yankee (Inf.) Division, headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, with one brigade in Connecticut. For his final year on active duty he was reassigned to Fort Devens, Massachusetts as a special assistant to the Commanding General of Army Readiness Region One as his advisor on National Guard matters relating to units in New England and New York State.
Col. Kulik's awards and decoration include 2 Legion of Merit, 2 Bronze Star Medals, 2 Meritorious Service Medals, 2 Air Medals, 2 Commendation Medals, Vietnamese Honor Medal 1st Class, 4 Battle Stars (Korean Conflict), 7 Battle Stars (Vietnam Conflict), 6 overseas Bars in Combat Zone, Meritorious Unit Citiation, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Cross of Galantry-with-Palm Unit Citation. He was authorized to wear U. S. Army general Staff I.D. badge and was recognized as an Honorary Submariner in 1966 after submerging on the U.S.S. Sea Lion SS 315, based in Norfolk, Virginia. While an ROTC instructor at Siena College, N.Y., he became a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus.
Col. Kulik retired in 1980 after 30 years on active duty. During his many years on active duty the family moved 22 times. The family went to live in Norfolk, Connecticut for the next 22 years. While there he was very active in Immaculate Conception Parish, as a Eucharistic Minister and Parish Council member. In June 2004 Mike and Peggy Moved to Meridian Idaho and became members of Holy Apostles Roman Catholic Church. In September of 2011 Mike and Peggy made their final move to Sedona, Arizona and are members of Immaculate Conception Church, Cottonwood, AZ.
