Son of James Slay and Elizabeth Davis. Joel enlisted on May 16, 1861 at Corinth, Mississippi and gave his age as 23. He re enlisted under the Conscription Act April 14, 1862. He was admitted to the Hospital at Lynchburg, Virginia on May 25, 1862 with pneumonia. On August 11, 1862, he was sent to CSA General Hospital at Danville, Virginia. He was sent to the Mississippi Hospital at Richmond, Virginia on February 22, 1863. After his return to service, he was wounded and sent to the General Hospital at Danville on May 19, 1863. Joel W. Slay was killed at the Battle of Spottsylvania Courthouse on May 12, 1864.
His brother David C. Slay, was killed during the battle at Vicksburg, Mississippi.
