John Henry Coumbs was born Thomas Coumbs and Elizabeth Marian (Cochran) Coumbs on Feb 16, 1871 in Renfrew, Ontario, Canada. He immigrated to California with his parents in 1876 and became a naturalized USA citizen in 1883. He was a successful merchant and owned a store.
John married Mary Elizabeth (Wallace) Coumbs on June 28, 1893. She died July 3, 1903 and the youngest son, Stewart Coumbs Gibson was raised by his aunt Charlotte Gibson. They had the following children:

Stewart Coumbs Gibson (1903-1955)
