World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Reading, Berkshire, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, British Army. On September 28, 1915, in actions near Vermelles, France, 2nd Lieutenant Turner volunteered to lead a new bombing attack. He made his way down the communication trench practically alone, throwing bombs which drove off the Germans about 150 yards within his own support lines. Even though he was shot, his personal effort enabled the reserves to advance with very little loss and subsequently covered the flank of his regiment averting the loss of hundreds of men. 2nd Lieutenant Turner died three days later from his wounds. For most prestigious gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. His brother was Lieutenant Colonel Victor Turner was also a Victoria Cross recipient in World War II.
