"A Grandpa Worth Loving"

He was born in October (I think). He was a beautiful son. His mother and father were proud of him. They had big plans for their son. They chose the name Walter. And so his name was Walter Barker. He was one of the seven boys in his family. He also had about five sisters. No one knew Walter would turn out to be as special as he was, even though he was greatly loved.

When he was a young man, he met a beautiful young woman named Mamie Elizabeth Ischy. They fell in love almost at once and were married. They had a wonderful kind of love, and from this love a son was born. They called him Wilburn. He was born so tiny that he could fit in a shoe box. He was not expected to live, but with the love of his parents, he did. A year or so later, another son was born. They called him Joe. He admired and loved his parents. Walter and Mamie were blessed with another son, Robert Vaden, Sr.

With the help of their wonderful parents, the three sons followed the straight path of life. Walter had been this way, too, that is he was never in any real trouble.

One by one as the boys turned into young men, they got married. Wilburn married Betty. They had daughters, four to be precise. Joe's wifes name was Polly. They were happy together and brought forth five daughters. Robert (my father) fell in love with Shirley Jean Davis (my mother). They lived and loved together which brought forth three daughters and one son.

By adding them up, Walter and Mamie had thirteen grandchildren, twelve granddaughters and one grandson. Walter and Mamie said often how proud they were of their children and grandchildren. Walter was especially proud of his grandson Robert Jr. He took Robert places with him and gave him things to keep and treasure. Walter and Mamie were Grandpa and Grandma or Ma and Pa to the grandchilden. All of us love Pa and Ma.

On January 19, 1973, one evening was different. When we got off the bus, we were told that Pa had passed away--died. He had had a heart attack. I thought of just the day before, I had been visiting with Pa and Ma. I kissed him bye for the last time. Only I didn't know it. I had to go somewhere and cry. We had lost one of our most treasured loved ones. It was hard for us to stand the loss, but we had to try.

I tried my best not to cry when I talked to my grandmother, but it was hard. I didn't want to make her cry any more than she had already.

Mama told us not to go to the funeral home unless we wanted to. All of us kids except Charlotte wanted to stay away from the funeral home. We wanted to remember Pa as he was.

Now, four months later, it is still hard to face the fact that God has taken Pa away from us and to His Kingdom in the sky. We will all miss him but will look forward to being with him in Heaven.

"Thrice Blessed"
by Jewell J Barker
In memory of Walter W. Barker

O' Lord, it's been one month since our loved one
Was taken away to a rebirth.
Bless him now in heaven, O' Lord,
Just as you did here on earth.
You blessed him in his marriage, O' Lord,
You gave him a wonderful wife
And together they lived for most of their life.
Through joys or sorrows, happiness or tears,
O'Lord, this marriage you blessed for forty-nine years.
Then you blessed him with children, O' Lord,
Three fine sons to be exact.
He love them and guided them gently, O'Lord,
Always keeping them on the right track.
Then you blessed him with grandchildren, O'Lord,
You blessed him with a dozen and two.
O'Lord, we thank you for all these miracles you do.
Bless us all, O'Lord, and let this be our humble prayer
That we all may be worthy to someday join him there.
Just let him know O'Lord that we who know and loved him best-
Feel that just by having known him Lord,
Our lives were also thrice blessed!
