Whitney Taylor Floyd
Beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully at his home, in the company of his devoted family, on Thursday morning, May 27, 2004.
Whitney "Whit" was born April 24, 1924, in the shadow of the Teton mountains, in Driggs, Idaho to Lyman Earl and Florence Taylor Floyd. At the age of 15, Whit and his family moved to Boise. He attended the new Boise High School, where he participated in the glee club and men's choir, which he enjoyed. The summer following his graduation in 1943 he reported to the Army Air Corp at Gowen Field. After boot camp, he went on to become a B-24 flight officer. He left on Jan. 12, 1943, to serve in the South Pacific, where he successfully completed 30 combat missions and received several medals and numerous commendations.
Whitney married Vera VanSickle on May 9, 1951, and they were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Whit began his career working for Idaho Power Co. as a surveyor, then later as a plant operator. They later moved with the Power Co. to Blackfoot, Idaho, then to Nampa, where they have since lived. Whitney retired from Idaho Power after 41 years of dedicated employment.
Whitney loved the outdoors and enjoyed people. He belonged to various civic organizations and made lifelong friends wherever he went. He was well known for his "wit" and personality. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many leadership positions over his lifetime. He especially treasured the scouting program and was active in helping many young men receive their Duty to God awards and the highest rank of scouting, the Eagle, which all four of his sons received.
Whitney's greatest achievement in life was as a husband and father. He was a kind and patient man who believed in serving others and was a wonderful example of charity. We look forward to being together as a family again someday soon.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Vera, and children: Terrill (Brenda) of West Jordan, Utah; Clarisse (Randy) Tate of Boise; Clifford (Carla) of Boise; Julie (Lane) Stephenson of Nampa; Aaron (Christine) of Rexburg; Steven of Eagle; Ellise (Devin) Weaver of St. Anthony; Laura (Robert) Hull of Nampa and Diane Floyd of Nampa. Also his sister Mary Smith of Boise, brothers: Vaun of Albuquerque, Bill of Idaho Falls and Rodney of Boise. He has 30 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers Gary and Alden and by a grandson, Daniel Floyd.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 1, in the Nampa Idaho South LDS Stake Center, 7809 Deer Flat Rd. A viewing will be held at the Church on Tuesday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1111 S. Orchard, Boise, ID 83705, or to the Perpetual Education Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of the Zeyer Funeral Chapel in Nampa.
