Fred Basil Gilchrist was a native of Cordova, Alabama and had resided in Gadsden since 1935. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Basil was director of the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Alabama for 35 years, and worked on the staff of the Gadsden Center for Cultural Arts. He is survived by wife, Jane Moore Gilchrist; two sisters, June and Jessie, and their husbands; nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Silas J and Eran E Dupree Gilchrist. Basil was the first yearbook editor of Emma Sansom High School, played in the band and graduated in 1943. In 1944, Basil joined the U.S. Army and served as a medic aboard troop ships sailing to Europe. Upon discharge, he attended University of Alabama and graduated in 1950. He was working on his Master's at Auburn and teaching Science and Speech at Disque Middle School when he learned of a job opening as Unit Director of the much-needed Boys Club in East Gadsden. In 1985 he received the Governor's Arts Award from the Alabama State Arts Council. With his actor's voice and bearing, he was a popular choice for special appearances from playing King Arthur in Birmingham's Town and Gown Theater in the 1960s, to Gadsden's Sesqui- centennial in 1996 portraying riverboat Capt James Lafferty in the re-enactment of the 1846 arrival of the first steamboat here. Basil is remembered as a humanitarian, showman, educator and good citizen who never said "no" to a worthy cause. Basil was a positive influence on the lives of thousands of young people during the 35 years serving the Boys and Girls Club. His friends were legion.
