Comedian. He was an American comedian, who imitated President John F. Kennedy in satire nightclub acts and on a record album. Besides being an impersonator, he was a musician, character actor, and club manager. Born in Waterville, Maine, he served in the U.S. Army and later began doing a standup comedy act in New York where his Kennedy impressions led to his 1962 album, "The First Family," giving him instant fame while still in his 20s. His album received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1963. The album sold 6.5 million copies, setting a Guinness world record for the fastest selling album in history. President Kennedy himself bought 100 copies to use as gifts to friends. He appeared in "Time" and "Life" magazines, performed on "The Ed Sullivan Show," and played to packed rooms in Las Vegas, earning a salary of over $22,000 a week. His impersonation career was cut short on November 22, 1963 when Kennedy was assassinated. Eventually, he returned to Maine where he wrote and played bluegrass and country music, becoming known for his honky-tonk performances in local lounges. His death was caused by complications from chronic emphysema and other ailments.
