Abram Adsit was born on 8 February 1834 in New York, son of Benjamin Adsit and Deborah Frost. He was married in 1854 in Grand Traverse County to Mary Wilhelmina Dietz. Mary was born on 2 April 1834 in Berlin, Germany, daughter of Henry Dietz and Caroline Rusch.
In 1859 and 1860, Abram purchased several pieces of property in Manistee and Grand Traverse County.
On 16 June 1860, Abram and Mary lived in Traverse township with four children: Nelson, Arnold, Ada, and Ida. Abram worked as a laborer. The family owned $200 in real estate and $500 in personal property.
Abram served in Company M of the 10th Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War. He enlisted at Grand Rapids on 10 March 1864 as a Private. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 January 1865 and to Sergeant on 8 April 1865. He mustered out at Memphis, Tennessee on 2 October 1865. He arrived back in the Grand Traverse area in November 1865. In 1867, he was one of the men who petitioned for the creation of Blair township. Later that year he advertised for a: STRAY MARE Strayed or stolen from the subscriber in Traverse City, on or about the 16th of May last, a Bay Mare with a band face, nine years old, All of her feet are white. Whoever will return her or give information where she may be found shall be liberally rewarded. Abram Adsit, Traverse City, July 2, 1867. He had further bad luck with a horse in January 1868: HORSE KILLED- Mr. Perkins, of Long Lake, some time since, dug a well on his premises, and failing to get water, partially filled and covered same. On Saturday last Mr. A. Adsit rode on horseback directly over the well. The horse fell in and was killed. Mr. Adsit fortunately escaped without injury.

Abram applied for a invalid pension for his Civil War service in June 1879.
On 18 June 1880, the couple and their children Nelson and Earl lived in Traverse village. Abram worked as a filer in a sawmill while Nelson was a lumber clerk and Earl attended school.
Abram received a patent for an insertible saw tooth on 12 May 1885.
Abram died on 29 March 1891. After his death, Mary applied for a widow's pension in June 1891.
On 8 June 1900, a widowed Mary lived with her daughter Ada, Ada's husband Elwyn Pope, and that couple's daughter Ethel in Traverse City.
Mary died on 25 February 1904 in Traverse City from senility.
Abram and Mary are buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
