AN AGED CITIZEN DIES
Mr. Sam Anderson, one of the oldest citizens of Mountain Grove Bath County, Va.. died at his residence late yesterday evening after an Illness of several weeks. Mr. Anderson was in his 78th year and was an old Confederate soldier, having served under the command of General Jackson during the Civil War. He was well known throughout the entire county of Bath, having settled at his present home soon after the close of the war. Mr. Anderson was a thorough Christian gentleman and was a deacon In the Mountain Grove Presbyterian church of which he was a member. He had many friends who, will hear with deep sorrow of his death. He is survived by nine children, five boys and four girls, Mrs. Harry McGuffin and Mr. Newton Anderson, of Covington, Va.; Mr. Frank Anderson and Mrs. J. A. Sharp, of Marlinton, W. Va.; Tom and James Anderson, of Nebraska; Mrs. S. J. Russell, of Shawnee. Oklahoma; Mrs. J. W. Harlow, of Washington, and Mr. William Anderson near Mountain Grove. Up to the present time no funeral arrangements had been made.

Enlisted on 3/31/1862 at Bath Alum Springs, VA., he was mustered into Bath Virginia Cavalry Company as a Private.
On 5/8/1862 transferred into new Company A when existing Bath Cavalry Company was divided into Companies A & B.
On 10/7/1862 the company was transferred as Company F, into 17th Battalion Cavalry.
On 2/5/1863, by addition of 2 Companies from 5th Virginia Cavalry, the 17th Battalion became the 11th Virginia Cavalry.
POW 5/3/1863 at Warrenton Junction, VA.; Paroled 5/19/1863 at Old Capitol Prison, Wash., D.C.
Present 12/31/1863 - 4/30/1864 Roll.

On 7/1/1908, living in Mountain Grove, Bath County, VA., he successfully applied for a partial disability Confederate Soldier Pension due to rheumatism. By 1915 he was totally disabled and receiving 443.20 per annum.

On 5/16/1932, his widow applied for a Confederate Soldier's Widow pension; she was approved for $120 per annum.

The 11th Virginia Cavalry Regiment was organized in February, 1863, by consolidating the 17th Battalion Virginia Cavalry, one company from the 24th Battalion Virginia Cavalry, and two companies of the 5th Regiment Virginia Cavalry. It was active in the conflicts at Upperville, Fairfield, Bristoe, and Mine Run. Later the regiment participated in The Wilderness Campaign, the defense of Richmond, and Early's Shenandoah Valley operations. It then disbanded as there were no members of the 11th at Appomattox.
