Hyrum was the 11th of 12 children born to Frederick Dent Messenger and Jane Marie Johnson. His siblings: John Ecard, Clark (died young), Mary Adelia, David Grove, Dennis Burris, Samuel Johnson, Royal Hastings, Virgil, twins Orlin and Rollin and Martha who was born after Hyrum's death. She also died young.

Hyrum was only 1 year, 1 month and 26 days old at his death. He is buried in a row with his father, three siblings [Samuel, Virgil and Martha] and three cousins.
